  • Please let me know if another person, other than yourself, will be picking up your child

Daybook & Communication

There will be a daybook for you to sign if you will not be at home and you are needed for an emergency. It is the parent's responsibility to be available to pick up your child if necessary. Please make sure that your emergency persons are available for your child if you are unable to be available.

  • Communication, open and ongoing, is the essential component for a good relationship and partnership.
  • I want you to feel comfortable in sharing your concerns, thoughts or ideas with me.
  • Working together will model cooperation for the children and ensure a positive preschool experience.
  • Problem-solving can be modeled when your child has an unresolved issue form preschool. Please come to me with your child and we will speak about the situation and resolve it together.
  • Please let me know if there are changes at home as they can affect a child's behavior. I want to be supportive of your child's needs.
  • I have an "open door" policy at the preschool. You are invited and encouraged to arrange a visit at both of our convenience.
  • Please feel comfortable if your child needs you to stay for awhile at the beginning of the preschool year or at the beginning of each class. Every child has a different level of comfort, security and time to separate from their parents. We can work together on this.
  • I will communicate with you on a regular basis about your child's progress in the program. Please do not hesitate to arrange a meeting time with me.
  • Please call me with any information you would like to share. This will enable us to have a successful partnership.

Medication & Health Guidelines

*Medications will only be administered when the required "Permission to Administer Medications" form has been completed and signed. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS.

  • A new form is required with each new medication
  • The medication must be handed directly to the educator or her substitute.
  • The medication is immediately placed in a locked box.
  • Medication is never to be placed in a child's snack bag/box.
  • Please do not send cough drops, etc.
  • The caregiver dropping off the child must be prepared to advise when the child received the last dose of the medication. Medication will not be given if this information is not or cannot be provided. This is a safeguard against accidental overdose. Cold medications and antibiotics will not be administered.
  • The only exception will be for medication required for allergic reactions. A separate permission form will be filed with medication to be kept on site.

Please inform me if your child has a communicable disease. Your child must stay home if they are at the beginning of a cold, have a temperature, or if they have been up most of the night for various reasons.

  • I will not hesitate to call you if your child is not well during the day.
  • I will expect that you will come to pick up your child immediately.
  • Please do not hesitate to call me with concerns and questions.
  • In the event of the ECE's absence due to illness, a substitute will be called in to supervise the class. I will ensure that any substitute ECE has all the required credentials and has completed an orientation program with me. They will also have completed a Criminal Records check with the Ministry of Attorney General.

Discipline Policy

View Royal Preschool adheres to the guidelines of the Ministry of Health's "Guidance & Discipline With Young Children" handbook. Discipline is the process by which children learn to develop socially acceptable and appropriate behaviors. Discipline is something, we as adults do with and for children. Behavioral expectations are based on the knowledge of trained professionals with their experience in child development. We spend a lot of time talking with the children through difficult social situations. We model good self-concepts and self-control. The children will be taught and modeled what to do, rather than what not to do. The children will be guided in a positive manner. The guidelines will be clear, consistent and the children will be given ample time to understand. Intervention strategies such as reminding, rephrasing, close adult supervision, redirecting, modeling, age appropriate choices and consequences will be used. Time out will only be used when necessary, in the event of safety for the child and for others. No child will be punished in a punitive manner. All children will be treated respectfully. The well-being, safety and self-esteem of each child is a priority!

Field Trips & Special Events

Field trips are an important part of the preschool experience. The children will learn what is expected them as a group in a public place. Field trips are also an opportunity for parents and children to socialize and make new friends. Field trips may be planned around monthly themes and the developmental needs of the children in the group. Most of the trips will begin and end at the preschool as this will accommodate car pooling when necessary. You are welcome to make arrangements for another parent to transport your child to and from the trip if you cannot attend.

We will also be inviting visitors from the community into the preschool. You will be given information about the trip from the monthly calendar, newsletter, bulletin board and the front door. There will be a notice posted the week before the visit.

There will be a monthly calendar posted on the information board. We will celebrate the Celebrations of Light such as Hallowe'en, Diwali, Chanukah, Christmas and New Year's, including the Chinese New Year.

I would like to welcome your family to join in our fieldtrips and special events during the preschool year. There will be sign-up notices on the bulletin board to enable me to know how many people we will have.

I would like to have guests in to speak on parenting issues throughout the preschool year. This will depend on interest and availability.

We may have social evenings for parents to get together as adults and visit. We will have a Saturday Open House for the children to bring in an adult from their life that works and hasn't had the opportunity to visit with them at preschool. On occasion, we may have guest speakers to talk on topics related to children.

Items Needed From Home

A complete change of clothes - your child will feel more comfortable if they have their own clothes to change into in the event of an accident or water/paint spill. I do have extra clothing if necessary.

**Inside Shoes/Slippers - these can be kept at preschool in the container for your child's class. You may want to send them each day. They are essential for your child's safety and necessary when we do fire drills and must go outside.

**Muddy Buddies - (nylon pants) - will ensure that your child will stay reasonably dry in wet weather. Please send hats, gloves, boots and warm coats in cooler weather. Mittens are easier for young children to put on and take off by themselves. I may take a smaller group of active children outside if I feel it's necessary.

**Sunblock - please try to apply sunblock before your child comes to preschool. The sun's rays are extremely strong in the warmer months and we must have a block on 30 minutes before we are exposed to the sun.

Snacks

Each child will bring their own snack. Please ensure that it is small and nutritional. Many children have difficulty processing sugary and prepackaged snack items. We will not have time to prepare each snack, so please send snacks precut and ready to eat. Some good snack ideas: fruit and vegetables, cheese and crackers, popcorn, sandwiches, cold pancakes, breadsticks, yogurt, apple sauce, bean salad, corn chips.

Please send and empty plastic cup with your child. The children will learn to pour their own water as well as other new self-help skills.

I do not believe in hungry children. Please send your child's breakfast or an extra snack item if they did not eat breakfast. They will be able to sit quietly and nibble whenever necessary.

Birthdays

This is a special day for you and your child. Please try to make arrangements to stay and have a visiting day on or close to your child's birthday.

We will celebrate birthdays at snack time. I will make a birthday hat for your child and we will sing Happy Birthday. This will be an opportunity to send a special treat with your child for that day. Cookies, rice krispie squares, cupcakes, etc., are welcomed for this occasion. Individual items are easier to serve.

We will celebrate summer birthdays in June or September, which ever is closest. I call this an Unbirthday Celebration.

Please do not give out birthday party invitations at the preschool. This may cause unnecessary hard feelings as sometimes not every child receives an invitation.

Allergies

If you make birthday treats for your child's celebration, please check with the educator and/or our allergy lists before the celebration. Individual allergies will be recognized!

We also ask that strong scents such as aftershaves, colognes and hair products be used away from the preschool. Many of the children with asthma react to these products. As well, many adults and children experience headaches from products made with strong chemicals.

Your cooperation helps to keep the preschool inclusive and a safe place for everyone.
